FRANCES H. BEZANSON SUPERVISED YARMOUTH HOT LUNCH PROGRAM
Portland Press Herald (ME) — Saturday, September 17, 1994
Frances H. Bezanson, 79, a longtime employee of G.M. Pollack & Sons who started the hot lunch program in Yarmouth, died Thursday in a local nursing home after a brief illness.
Mrs. Bezanson was the first supervisor of the Yarmouth School Department's hot lunch program, which she ran for 11 years.
''She started the program in the early 1950s,'' said her daughter, Elizabeth Doyle. ''Back then she did it all. She was the cook, the bookkeeper, and she took care of all the money, the cleaning, serving the kids.''
Mrs. Bezanson ran the hot lunch program out of the former Yarmouth Grammar School on Main Street, near where the Town Hall is now.
''There was no fast food,'' said her daughter. ''You had one nutritious meal, and a dessert or a fruit. There were no choices.''
By the time she got through in 1964, the program had moved to the new high school, and she was mainly an administrator. After that Mrs. Bezanson took a job as a bookkeeper for G.M. Pollack & Son jewelers in Portland. For many years she handled time payments out of a tiny office on the sales floor of the store on Congress Street. Later she moved to Pollack's headquarters in Scarborough.
''She was still doing it three days a week after she had a stroke in May,'' said her daughter. ''She never really retired. Pollack's was like a big family to her.''
''She's a doll,'' said Gerald M. Pollack, her boss. ''She worked for me for about 32 years. She was as devoted, as loyal, as fine a person as one would ever want to meet.''
''She knew every youngster in the Yarmouth schools, and every youngster loved her. Many years after, they would come in the store, and they were so thrilled to see her. She always had an infectious smile.''
Born in Orange, Mass., a daughter of Irving A. and Mabel Sawyer Wright, she graduated in 1932 from Brockton (Mass.) High School.
She married M. Hartley Bezanson in 1940, and they moved to Maine in 1949.
They lived in Friendly Village in West Gorham for many years. Before that they lived in Saco and Yarmouth.
Mrs. Bezanson was a past president of Maine School Food Service, a past matron of the Winnegance Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, a longtime member of the Board of Yarmouth Assembly of Rainbow Girls and a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of Gorham. She enjoyed car trips throughout Maine and Nova Scotia.
Mr. Bezanson died in 1990, and a daughter, Ruth Ellen Bezanson, died in 1972.
Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Doyle of Falmouth; two sisters, Marjorie Delaney of Brockton, and Virginia Jacobson of Pennington, N.J.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth. The Rev. Philip Sherman will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Yarmouth.1
