Athol High Grad Dies Of Illness Contracted In War
Quartermaster Paul E. Gobeil, 20, of the Merchant Marine, of Hubbardston, and a graduate of Athol High School in 1942, died Friday night in the St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester, after a long illness.
He was born in Gardner, the son of Emery J. and Adelaide Taylor Gobeil, and went to Hubbardston as a small boy to live with his grandmother, Mrs. Henry Taylor.
In November after his graduation in 1942, he enlisted in the Merchant Marine.
He went to North Africa, Italy, and England. He was stricken last September with pneumonia and was ready to return to service the first of the year when he was stricken with a malady which could not be diagnosed. He was first taken ill in England.
He leaves his father in White Plains, N. Y., and his mother of Worcester, one sister, Miss Helen, of Worcester and his grandmother.
The funeral was held this afternoon in the Congregational Church in Hubbardston. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery.3

Dorothy Greer Johns, 93, of Waycross, Ga., formerly of Hawkinsville, Ga., died Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at Baptist Village in Waycross. Graveside funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5, 2013 in Orange Hill Cemetery with Dr. Don McClung and the Very Rev. Dr. Gary Abbott officiating. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. before the service at Clark Funeral Home in Hawkinsville.
Mrs. Johns was born in Concord, Massachusetts and was the daughter of the late Helen Roberts and the step-daughter of the late Cecil Roberts. She was a graduate of Wakefield High School in Wakefield, MA and Boston City Hospital School of Medical Technology in Boston, MA. She had a long, much-loved career as a medical laboratory technician in both hospital and private medical laboratories. She was the wife of the late Rev. Jean M. Greer for over 51 years. Dorothy was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hawkinsville, Ga. and the Faith Sunday School class for 19 years. She was recently a member of the First Baptist Church of Waycross, Ga. She was a volunteer as a "Pink Lady" at Taylor Regional Hospital for 14 years and a Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer. Dorothy was also a past member of the advisory board of Taylor Home Health Care. One of her greatest joys was helping to build a Habitat for Humanity house in Hawkinsville, Ga.
She is survived by her husband of 13 years, Willard C. Johns and her three children: daughter, Priscilla J. Fowler of Denver, Colorado; friend Gary Ford of Westcliffe, Colorado; son, Barry (Lauren) Greer of Corvallis, Oregon; son, Rev. Bruce (Dale Rogoff) Greer of White Plains, NY; grandchildren, Ezra Fowler, Amy, Jonathan, Jeffrey and Kaitlin Greer; stepsons, Cal (Celeste) Johns, Nathan (Kimberly) Johns; 2 step-granddaughters, Rachael and Elizabeth Johns; two brothers, Cecil Roberts of Littleton, Colorado and Frank (Barbara) Roberts of North Reading, MA; several nieces and nephews.
