Summers
Tattrie was born in 1871.
1 She From: Gordon M. Haliburton's notes, page 5 - Summers (or Somers) Tattrie, (1871- ) who never married, is mentioned in an old newspaper as being involved in a brawl at Londonderry one November (year unknown); on 9 Nov. "the Londonderry Dramatic Company's performance in St. Bridget's Hall was interrupted, and the audience annoyed by the conduct of several intoxicated young men, who had gained admittance to the Hall, all of whom were afterward arrested on charge of disturbing a public meeting". There were seven of them found guilty and fined. The story noted that "Summers Tattrie, one of the chaps Office (E.C.) Cribb brought to justice posed as quite a pugilist at Londonderry and boasted no constable could arrest him. After a lively battle Tattrie was downed, hand cuffed and placed in jail. On the 14th he was tried in Truro before Justice J.W. Johnson for resisting arrest. For his offence Magistrate Johnson fined him $10 and costs..." From this and other information it appears that a number of the male descendants of the second George inherited lots of strength and fighting capacity, and that some evidently did not always use it in a sociable way.

1 George Sparmaker Tattrie From the International Genealogical Index: Tattrie, George baptized 1813 Lake Road, Colchester County, NS Spouse is Agnes Carr. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------- From an 8 page addendum to his book "Tattrie Family of River John, N.S. by Gordon MacKay Haliburton" - Patterson was fascinated by Sparmaker George and in a lengthy footnote wrote: Perhaps we may be pardoned for saying something of "Sparmaker George" or "Spar" as he was commonly called. He was a great wit and one of the best known characters or his day As ~ young many he went to work as a spar-maker in the shipyards of the Hon. Alex. Campbell and after his death, he continued to work in the yards of his sons until shipbuilding was over in Tatamagouche. He made all or nearly all the spars for the many ships built in the Cambell (sic) yards. and was regarded as a master workman. He was a powerfully built man and for years held the reputation of being the ablest man with his fists in North Colchester. Nor in his old age did his spirit forsake him, for as an old man with vivid language and empassioned gestures, he retold his battles of the past. One of his last encounters was at an election held, we believe, in 1887. crowds made rings and watched the fight, which began on the street near Blackwood's and finally ended up on the road to Patterson's wharf But "Spar", no longer young, found no easy victory and the spectators were divided in their verdict, according to their partialities, as might be expected. Hon. Frank H. Patterc; On Tatamagouche, N 5. 1771-1824 Truro, NS Dec. 1971 Cyclostyled, 169 pages Spar had a devastating repartee and was a natural born story-teller. His tales were a legion and, needless to say, in many he often bore a prominent and victorious part. After shipbuilding was over he lived on his farm on the Lake Road and worked til a great age, being well over ninety when he died. I remember him slightly. Sparmaker George is said to have had eight children. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------.

It was great to meet cousins. It seems the TATTRIE's can be hot tempered as was related to me by Ruth Rita TATTRIE NERONE who is in her 80's. She told me the story of Arthur Sr. and Allen Sr. the sons of Alexander Tattrie b 1836 my g. grandfather. It seems that when he died there was a toolchest that was left to Allen. Arthur disputed this and the families have had very little to do with each other since. What is even stranger is that most don't even know why they are not talking. __________________________________________________________________________ _.
