Obituary from The Idaho Statesman (Boise, Idaho), 7 August 2022:
Boise, Idaho - Betty Jean (Bertrand) Rene was born on March 4, 1935 to Marjorie Bezanson Weaver and James Anthony Bertrand in Providence, Rhode Island. She passed away on May 14, 2022 in Boise, Idaho from Alzheimer’s disease. Betty grew up in a close extended family, in the small town of Bristol, Rhode Island, on the New England coast. Her father nicknamed her “Clam Belly” when she was little, because her belly looked like the soft, round center of a clam. She graduated from Colt Memorial High School in Bristol R.I.
in 1953. Her favorite subjects were geometry and French. She loved ice skating and dancing (especially the Jitterbug), field hockey, babysitting and helping her mom. After high school, she graduated from Johnson and Wales Business School in Providence R.I., where she studied secretarial skills. She worked at the U.S.
Rubber Factory, then at Collins and Aikman Corporation in Bristol, where her father was a chemist. Her father passed away in 1956 when Betty was twenty one years old. Betty met her husband, C. Ronald Rene, in the seventh grade. They dated for ten years.
Betty and Ron married on February 1, 1958 at St. Joseph’s Church in Providence R.I. He affectionately called her by her maiden name, “Betty Bertrand”. They shared a love that never died. Ron’s career took the family from Rhode Island to Connecticut, New York, and more 20 than years in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Betty had a quiet strength that often went unrecognized. She was the silent partner that kept everything afloat. She was skilled at making new homes smell good with homemade “cake-in-the- pan”, spaghetti sauce and roast beef, finding new resources for the family (much more challenging before Google and Google Maps) and making new friends. She was responsible, organized, detailed and a “list maker”. When they retired they moved back to their home town of Bristol, R.I.
to be with family and lifelong friends. In 2013 they moved yet again, this time to Boise, Idaho to be with their children and grandchildren in their final years. Betty was devoted to her family, friends, neighbors and the family golden retriever, Gus. She did the most honorable work there is – devoting her life to others; helping them grow and succeed, especially as a wife and mother. She was selfless.
She cared for her mother, and looked after her almost every day for the last twelve years of her life. She was compassionate, empathetic and never criticized others. She had a huge heart. Betty was always in motion. It was hard to keep up with her on walks or in the grocery store.
She had a lead foot when she drove. She played golf, volunteered at the VA Hospital, and participated in community organizations like Junior League and SHARE. She loved music and knew the words to every song she ever heard, from childhood songs to her kids’ music in the 70’s. She liked George Shearing, Pat Metheny and Don Mc Lean’s “American Pie”. She remembered lyrics to most songs through her years with Alzheimer’s.
She read a newspaper every day. She put up with shenanigans from her children and children’s friends that she did not share with her husband. Her friends said she was a great hostess with a fabulous sense of humor, a quick wit, a kind and caring heart, a curious nature, and an ability to laugh at herself. Betty adored her grandsons; they brought her joy. She went to all of their athletic events.
She and Ron moved to Boise to maximize their time with their grandsons and watch them grow on and off the field. She loved cooking their favorite foods and meeting their friends. Her grandsons were compassionate and skilled at putting her at ease when memory loss issues upset her. The family sincerely thanks everyone who guided us and cared for Betty during her thirteen years with Alzheimer’s. We could not have survived the challenges of Alzheimer’s without ALL of her caregivers; especially the individuals who taught us how to be better caregivers.
Betty was preceded in death by her father James, her mother Marjorie, her sister Doris DeWolf, and her husband Ron of 59 years. She is survived by her three children: Rebecca, Roberta and Richard, her three grandchildren: Shane, Brett and Dylan René. Her daughter in- law, Kim Haller Rene. Her sister in law Suzanne (René) Weed and her husband William of Kensington Maryland, her nieces and nephews Mark and Jon Weed, Lisa (René) House, Paul René, and Brad, Brian and Jim de Wolf; and numerous great nieces and nephews. As the family historian, Betty always remembered and recognized birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and passing’s.
She was wonderful at sending cards and handwritten notes to people. In lieu of flowers or donations, please send a non-electronic note to someone and let them know you love them. A celebration of life for Betty and her husband Ron will be held on September 24, 2022 in Bristol R.I.2
