Obituary from The Chronicle-Herald (Halifax, Nova Scotia), 28 December 2022:
Mable Ilena ROBAR (Hiltz) — Aylesford
Age 98, long-time Aylesford resident, passed away peacefully in Heart of the Valley Long-Term Care, Middleton, on Monday, December 26, 2022. Born February 19, 1924, in the Forties Settlement, Lunenburg Co., she was the last surviving member of the family of the late Roderick Lee and Ethel Adelia (Bezanson) Hiltz.
After attending Forties Community School, Mable moved to the Valley and was employed at various food processing facilities in the Aylesford area. In the late 1940s, she began work as a telephone operator in Aylesford, eventually serving as Chief Operator. Mable met Arnold Robar not long after she came to Aylesford. They were married in 1951 and had daughters, Dawn Colleen and Twila Lee. Starting in the early 1970s, Mable was employed at Enserink’s Nursery as a greenhouse technician and then as a postal clerk for Canada Post in Aylesford, from where she retired in 1992. After retirement, Mable and Arnold enjoyed working on their hobby farm, gardening, traveling and spending time at the family cottage at Donnellan’s Brook. Arnold passed away suddenly on Mother’s Day, May 11, 2003. Mable and her elder daughter Dawn traveled several times to Europe. In 2009 Mable, daughters Dawn and Twila and son-in-law John took a family trip to Ireland, which was greatly enjoyed. Mable entered Heart of the Valley in March of 2020 and was well cared for by the staff there. Mable was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Auburn, and took part in many aspects of church life - altar guild, organizing suppers and teas, sewing church linens, and visiting sick and shut-ins. She was a volunteer canvasser for the Cancer Society, the Red Cross and other organizations. She had a wonderful personality, a winning smile and a twinkle in her eye that gained her many friends.
Mable is survived by her daughter, Twila Robar-DeCoste and son-in-law, John DeCoste, Aylesford; and by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Arnold St. Clair Robar; her elder daughter, Dawn Robar (in June of 2022); son-in-law, Brian Webster; sisters, Harriet Keddy, Elva Keddy, Viola Hiltz, Annie Hiltz, and Vena Hiltz; brothers, Boyd Hiltz, Stanley (Hop) Hiltz, Reginald Hiltz, Basil Hiltz, James Hiltz, and Irvine Hiltz.
There will be no public visitation by request. Mable requested both a ‘green burial’ and an interment at sunset. In accordance with her wishes, interment will take place in St. Mary’s Anglican Cemetery, 20 Morden Rd., Auburn, on Thursday, December 29th at 4 p.m., followed by a funeral eucharist in St. Mary’s Anglican Church with Rev. Canon Lynn Uzans presiding. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Middleton Funeral Home. www.middletonfuneralhome.com.4
