1 He From: The Shepherds of Markland by Scott Winston Teal, Page 114 Here is one of the greatest mysteries within the Langille family! Susan may have married a Mr. Cole and lived near Waughs River. Who were the REAL parents of George Burton and Susan Langille? Susan appears to vanish from records, however her brother Burton's family today covers Pictou County. According to Burton's descendents he was born and raised in Marshville. His father was Mr. McLanders from Brule, andhis mother was a Langille who lived in Brule, Page 115 Marshville or River John. This is to say that John Mitchell Langille and his wife Mary Jane were NOT the parents of George Burton Langille!!! Burton's early life is shrouded in mystery. I do know for fact that he was raised by Mary Jane Langille, daughter of Nicholas Langille and Ruth Dunn of Brule Point, and John Mitchell Langille, legitimate son of David Langille and Catherine Patriquin of River John. So Burton's branch of Langilles like numerous other North Shore Langilles, are not true Langilles! So who were his biological parents? Almost certainly Burton's father was a McLanders from Brule. McLanders was young and unwed when a local girl presumably named Langille became pregnant with his child. McLanders wished to be married to the girl but her father forbid it saying he was not worthy of her. Instead this man later married someone else and one of his children was David McLanders who became a police officer inPictou in the early 1900s. David McLanders would be Burton's half brother. No more information can be found on Burton's paternal side. So who was his mother? According to family legend Burton was raised by his true mother, apparently who would be Mary Jane Langille, a member of the "Black Langilles", who themselves are not true Langilles anyway! Mary Jane was married in 1865, 8 years before Burton's birth. This peice (sic) of evidence conflicts with family legend. In 1871 a baby boy was born out of wedlock to a Mary Jane Langille of the River John area. He was given the name John Havelock Langille. Burton's mother was the only "Mary Jane", in the area eligible for childbirth in 1871. Born in 1832, she would have been approxamately (sic) 39 years old. George Burtons birth year was given as 1873 on his marriage certificate. In 1873, Mary Jane was 41 years old. Burton had a closer relationship to his foster father John Mitchell Langilles' family more so than the Brule Langille on his mothers side, as Burton sometimes stayed at the home of his Uncle Mark or Uncle Jacob, John Mitchell's brothers. There are too many conflicting stories to say for sure just who Burton's mother was. I will offer some theories here. First: John Havelock of 1871, and George Burton of 1873, may actually be the same person. After 1873 John Havelock cannot be found in records. Perhaps Mary Jane renamed her son and lied to him about the year of his birth! This supports the descendents legend of Burton being raised by his mother. I have spoken to older residents of River John who knew of John Mitchell Langille and his wife Mary Jane. They said that the couple raised two orphaned children, named Susan and Burton. It was common in those days for a couple to take in orphans and give them their surname with any legal documentation being done. The chances of Mary Jane giving birth for the first time at the age of 39 or 40 in my mind is slim, since medical technology was poor at this time. Had Mary Jane become pregnant by McLanders in 1873 she would have committed adultry. It is my conclusion Mary Jane Langille was not Burton's real mother, but maybe a child of a close relative of her. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------. They hail from the McLanders family. With regret during the publication of this documentary my records on George Burton's children were lost, so some information is missing and there may have been more children than what is listed above.
