Obituary from The Chronicle-Herald (Halifax, Nova Scotia), 27 October 2023:
James Albert "Carl" HOLMAN
Age 78 of Dartmouth. After a courageous 20-year journey with cancer, Carl was called from earth and passed on October 21, 2023, at home surrounded by family.
Carl was born in Sheet Harbour, on March 18, 1945, son of Alec and Lillian (Bezanson) Holman. At age 18, Carl met the love of his life Joan (Smiley) of Port Dufferin. They married in August 1965, and had four children. Carl and Joan moved to Halifax in 1966 where he took a job at CN Rail. In 1970, they built their home in Humber Park where the neighbors grew into family - the Norquay’s remain across the street. The majority of Carl’s career was spent in rental and heavy equipment sales in both construction and forestry. Carl was co-owner of Coastal Rentals, then sales at Liftow and Lounsbury/Wajax. Carl retired in 2011, and he and Joan spent their winters in Florida, where they enjoyed meeting new people and forming new friendships. During the summers they spent most weekends in their summer home in Sheet Harbour, where the door was always open for family and friends. He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Carl had an infectious energy with his larger-than-life personality. Along with his generosity, and always wanting to lend a helping hand no matter the project, he was both a Jack and Master of all trades. Carl loved his annual family camping trip to Cavendish and the annual Spry Harbour Atoms golf tournament. He enjoyed playing golf with his sons and never missed a hockey or ringette game. Carl looked forward to his annual fishing trips with his Coastal Rental buddies. He was also a member of Dartmouth Jaycees, Cole Harbour PC Party and the ECOTS. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, curling, gardening and NASCAR. Carl’s last family outing was to the Great Outdoors Comedy Festival to see Jerry Seinfeld, crossing another one off the bucket list.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Joanie, and children Carl, Susie (Peter), Scott, grandchildren Jordan, Dale, Julia, and Olivia, all of Dartmouth. Brothers, Cyril (Barb), Eugene (Patsy), Leonard (Karen), Brother in-law Max White, seven aunts and uncles and many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents, Infant son Robert, sister Annie White, sister in-law Joan Burger, and nephew Karl Burger.
A visitation will be held October 29, 2023, from 6-8 p.m. and Funeral Service to take place October 30, 2023, at 11am. Both will be held at Saint Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church 320 Flying Cloud Drive, Dartmouth with Archbishop Emeritus, Martin Currie. The Funeral Service will also be live streamed October 30th, at 11 a.m. on Facebook (search) CTK Funeral Ministry.
We wish to express our sincere thanks to Dr. David Creighton, Glenna McLellan, Dr. David Bell, Dr. Robyn MacFarlane, Dr. Lara Best, Dr. Michael Ha, and their wonderful teams.
