Uravan Man Questioned In Murder
Inquest Into Bludgeon Slaying Set Friday
NATURITA -- Frank Sharp, Uravan, was arrested Wednesday night as a suspect in the bludgeon slaying of C. L. (Doc) Gilliatt, Nucla service station operator, Wednesday.
Body of Gilliatt was found Wednesday morning at a point one mile south of Vancoram, government housing project near Naturita.
An inquest has been tentatively set for 10 a. m. Friday at Montrose.
Sheriff Arthur Sutton and Theodore L. Brooke, district attorney, questioned Mr. Sharp at the Naturita jail this morning and were expected to take him to Montrose County jail this afternoon.
Sheriff Sutton, Dr. G. G. Balderston, coroner, Ed Kretsman, Naturita marshal and deputy sheriff. and Clarence Walisky, deputy coroner at Nucla, were among the officers investigating the death Wednesday.
Gilliatt's head was bludgeoned by an object believed to have been either a miner's pick or a hammer, officers said. John Kreidler described the bludgeoning as "literally beating out the brains." No weapon has been found.
Sharp is a brother of Mrs. Emma Bell, who has accused her husband, Oliver Thomas (Tom) Bell, of slaying their infant son last September in a remote canon.
The body of Gilliatt is at the Ormsbee Mortuary at Montrose.
Jack Morrill and Tom Gilmore, truck drivers for M. V. Gilmore, Uravan trucker, discovered the body about eight feet from the old highway between Naturita and Paradox about 11 a.m. Wednesday. When they drove by the spot at 7 a m., they observed nothing different. When they went by at 9 a. m., they saw the blood on the road, and they returned at 11 a.m. to investigate.8
