1 He From: The Tattrie Family of River John, N.S. by Gordon MacKay Haliburton, Page 80 - George Philip Tattrie was destined from infancy for the Presbyterian Ministry, just as his older brother Hector was to stay on the farm. So, although he may have been an inattentive infant during the morning family prayers, a Minister he became. he went from Pictou Academy to Dalhousie (B.A. 1894) then attended the Presbyterian College in Halifax for two years. In 1896 he was licensed by the Presbytery of Halifax, and set off to take up a pastorate in Western Canada. He was ordained by the Presbytery of Rock Lake, Manitoba, on 14 July, 1896, and then laboured in Saskatchewan for eight years. In 1904 he returned to the east to study at Princeton Theological Seminary, and in 1905 received his B.D. He then served at New Carlisle (Quebec) for eight years, at Tabusintac (N.B.) another eight, and then in July 1921 was inducted at O'Leary, PEI "where he laboured with acceptance for five and a half years, when he was called to the Church above, having served thirty years in the active ministry of the Church". His official obiturary, in the Yearbook of the United Church of Canada for the year 1927 continues: "He was a faithful preacher of the Word, a conscientious pastor, and an excellent presbyter, knowing well the procedure of the courts of his Church. He was a man of integrity, not given to ostentation, but generous of heart, giving liberally to missions. The New Church at O'Leary, where his funeral service was held on March 10th, will stand as a fitting monument to his faithful services for Christ in that field". George P. Tattrie married (1) Mabel Sutherland and (2) Helen Simpson. He had one child, born of the second marriage. He died of anemia in his manse at O'Leary when his son was about three and a half years old. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------[Broderbund Family Archive #118, Ed. 1, Canadian Genealogy Index, 1600s - 1900s, Date of Import: Jan 20, 1997, Internal Ref. #1.118.1.81716.11] Individual: Tattrie, Rev. 1 She From: The Tattrie Family of River John, N.S. by Gordon MacKay Haliburton, page 82 Laura Ellen Tattrie was born in the family home on 16th March 1872. Her father wore out the knees of this thick homespun trousers when he went for the family doctor, the snow being many feet deep, and with a hard cust. So much younger than her two sisters, she was in effect the only daugther in the house. On 25 August 1892 she married Alexander "Baxter" Langille (1867-1952) the son of Marshville neighbours Isaac Langille (1837-1913) and his wife Elizabeth Douglas. Mrs. Langille was dead, so Laura simply took charge of ther household and her father-in-law. Baxter Langille farmed the acres which had been in the family from the beginning. Laura Tattrie had gone to Boston wehre so many relatives were, but had soon become homestick and was glad to be married and live in familiar surroundings the rest of her life. In due course the family farm was turned over to her eldest son and she and her husband moved down the road a mile, after the death of her husband she moved into the village of River John with her bachelor son Ralph, and was joined there by her daughter Hazel and son-in-law Carl Langille. So her days came serenely to a close where they had been quietly spent. She died. 7 June 1959. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------.
