Bezanson; two sisters, Mrs H. E. Miller of South Hanover and Mrs H. S. Yui11 of Brockton; two brothers, C. E. Bezanson of Syracuse, N Y, and J. Z. Bezanson of Ashby, Mass. The burial was in Boxboro.9

Claude Bezanson Dies at Age 81

Claude E. Bezanson, 81, of 1822 Rochester avenue died Sunday morning in an Iowa City nursing home where he had been a patient five weeks.

Memorial services will be held in Hazardville, Ky., where Mr. Bezanson had lived prior to moving to Iowa City August 20. He was living here with a son, Philip.

Mr. Bezanson was born September 7, 1882, in Nova Scotia, the son of Calvin and Elizabeth Vaughn Bezanson.

Also surviving is another son, Warren, of Hazardville; a sister, Mrs. Blanche Yuill of San Antonio, Texas, and two grandchildren.

Beckman's is in charge of local arrangements.13

HADLEY, MASS. — Philip Bezanson, 58, head of composition at the University of Iowa School of Music in Iowa City, Ia., from 1954 to 1964, died at his home here Monday.

Memorial services will be held here today. The body will be cremated. Mr. Bezanson is survived by his wife, Lillian, a son and a daughter.

Mr. Bezanson received his masters and doctorate degrees from the University of Iowa and joined the U of I faculty in 1946. In 1964 he was named to head the music department at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, Mr. Bezanson won awards from the Society for Publication of American Music and the Fromm Foundation and was a member of the American Composers Alliance. His compositions included a piano concerto performed by the U of I's John Simms with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1853, and many chamber music works.

Mr. Bezanson wrote the music for an opera, "Western Child," to a libretto by the U of I's Paul Engle.6

     Dr. Philip Bezanson was a composer and educator. He graduated from Yale University School of Music, did his graduate studies at the State University of Iowa, and joined the faculty there. Dr. Bezanson studied composition with David Stanley Smith, Richard Donovan and Philip Greely Clapp. In 1964, Dr. Bezanson was named head of the Music Department of the University of Massachusetts Amherst.7
     He won several awards and had several notable students. His opera "Golden Child" was performed on television on the Hallmark Theatre. The Bezanson Recital Hall at the University of Massachusetts is named after him.7
