SOUTH ORLEANS — Jane Barry Bahler, 62, of South Orleans and New York City, died Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Hartford, Conn., on May 12, 1945, she was a daughter of Gwendolyn Hobbs and the late Alfred Barry, and also the stepdaughter of the late Malcolm R. Hobbs, Editor Emeritus of The Cape Codder.
She lived in Manhattan for 37 years and also in South Orleans, where she enjoyed her gardens and the sparkling beaches. Jane attended Orleans schools, graduating with the first Nauset Regional High School class in 1963.
After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Lake Erie College in 1967, she was employed by the Boston Redevelopment Authority. Subsequently, in New York, she worked at the Ted Bates Agency and as an interior designer. Her pro bono work in special education as a board member of The Gateway School in New York City drew her adult interest, as did continuing passion for the arts.
Jane leaves her husband, Earl Bahler, and son Graham, both of New York City; and daughter, Sara, of Los Angeles. She is also survived by her mother, Gwendolyn Hobbs, of Orleans; sister, Lynn Vardakis, of Brooklyn; and step-brothers, Christopher Hobbs of Jamaica Plain and Steven Hobbs of Orleans. She will be remembered for her tremendous warmth, compassion and generosity to all those she touched.
A graveside service at Orleans Cemetery is scheduled for — p.m., Saturday, July 21.4
