Pilots Escape After Collision; One Flies Home

Two T-33 jet training planes from Greenville Air Force Base collided in the air Friday south of Gould, Ark., at 1:45 p.m. One of the pilots was injured slightly when he parachuted to safety.

The Air Force identified the pilot who jumped as Aviation Cadet Helmut Kraus of Augsburg, West Germany. He was taken to a hospital in Dumas, Ark., and later moved to the base hospital in Greenville.

The other pilot, Aviation Cadet Conrad B. Edgett, Jr., managed to take his damaged plane back to the base.

The jet piloted by Kraus burned in a soybean field near Gould. A GAFB fire truck extinguished flames on arrival.
